About & FAQ

Open Floor Plan is a free floor plan maker for people designing their own home. No sign-up, and it runs in your browser. It is meant to be simple enough for anyone, not only for professionals. There is no account to create and nothing to pay. It works on a phone and on a computer, in the browser you already have.

You can start from a blank page, or bring in a picture of a plan you already have. A photo or a scan of an estate agent's floor plan works when the file is a JPG, PNG, WebP, or SVG. Trace the walls over that picture, or draw the walls yourself. Then set the scale from a length printed on the plan, or from the area of one room, so the measurements are real. Until the scale is set, lengths stay blank rather than showing a guess.

Doors, windows, and bay windows sit in the walls. Stairs can be straight, L-shaped, or U-shaped. Furniture covers the pieces people actually own, from beds and sofas to kitchen appliances and bathroom fittings. A switch changes the whole plan between metres and feet and inches, and you can type a length in either. A 3D view lets you look around the rooms you have drawn, and the 3D view only loads when you open it.

You name each room and read its area on the plan. A room drawn around the walls shows the area inside those walls. You can measure a distance on the drawing to check a length, and you can undo a change. Grid snapping helps lines stay straight, and you can turn snapping off when you need a free placement.

When the plan looks right, export a PNG image or a PDF. You can also download the plan as a file and open that file again later. On a phone, you can move furniture by dragging it, and the main controls sit along the bottom of the screen.

Your plans stay in this browser, on this device. They are not sent to a server, and there is no tracking or analytics. If you want a copy in Google Drive, sign in with Google. Google then lets Open Floor Plan see and change only the files it creates, in a folder named Open Floor Plan. It cannot open the rest of your Drive. There is no AI in the app. Drawing and measuring happen in your browser. Your plans are saved on your device, or in your own Google Drive if you choose.

Yes, as a picture. Import a JPG, PNG, WebP, or SVG, trace over it, then set the scale from a printed length or from a room's area. A PDF is not imported as the background. You can also open a plan you saved earlier as a .floorplan.json file.

Metric or imperial?
